All Alone

Dawn's light filters through the leaves,
In a pattern of light and shadow.
I walk along my path to somewhere,
And I'm all alone in the world.

Two chipmunks chase each other around,
In a circle of playful delight.
We were once like that, my love.
Why did it end this way?

A cat stalks my playful friends,
So unaware of their lurking danger.
I'm reminded we were much like them,
And losing you cuts like a knife.

Each day begins so new and unspoiled.
No one can foresee danger coming.
How many days did we walk here, my love?
How many promises will go unspoken?

If that cat earns its early breakfast,
Of one of my playful new friends.
Our life is like theirs you know.
Someone always goes heartbroken

I wonder how the loss is felt,
And if the other can go on.
We planned so much together, my love.
Now our dreams have all but vanished.

My friends scurry to their den close by,
Before their enemy can strike.
I wish we had the same chance, my love.
Why can't we now start over?

They get to play life's game again,
And start more days together.
And I return to my empty house,
To watch you leave with my life.

I agree, dear one, that earlier in life
We walked the same sweet path.
But, now, I see the path has changed,
Separated by fate and chance.

Playing, as small animals do,
We ran and sang sweet songs.
We didn’t hear the danger call.
Our hearts deafened our ears.

Silencing the outside world,
We ran and danced all day.
That wily cat had plans for us.
How could we have known our fate?

Unlike two furry friends you speak,
We chose our paths too soon.
We scurried past our safe, sweet den,
And wandered far from home.

Our paths are very separate now,
And loneliness fills our lives.
Too lost to find our way back home,
Too changed to regain our love.

The song for us has changed, dear one,
So sad, a melancholy tune.
I weep and mourn our passing love.
You must know my sadness too.

So, now the early morn has come,
To return with its new light.
We shall go on to play life’s game,
All alone and separated by fate.

As you return from your walk today,
And look upon my face,
We'll smile with sweet remembrance,
Then I'll sigh and walk away.
